Yes, you ideally would want a static IP, but you can do it with services like no-ip.com (cost involved). But the idea of hosting your own email isn't a bad one, you could do it on a Linode really easily.
Blacklisting only happens if you're stupid and host an open-relay, which you won't ever do, ever. As long as you're sensible about setting it all up, keep it secure, don't allow sending of spam etc. you'll be fine.
Beyond the domain name, you can make it a lot easier by making sure the RDNS is set up correctly, add a
TXT/SPF record and all that jazz and you'll be fine. Fundamentally no different to a company setting up their own mail server.
Or just stick it on Google Mail and set up rules and labels for the different accounts.

Hmmm, one extra click, surely?
I like my inbox being cleaner. All the stuff I actually want to read/reply to is in Primary. The stuff I want a record of but don't actually want to read is in Social and the stuff I
might
care about but usually don't is in Promotions.

I'm giving the Google Mail POP3 Mail Fetching a go with some less important email addresses.
My problem with labels/rules previously was that the last time I setup rules on GMail it was a total pain in the arse. Seems better now. I think one of my issues was making sure these other emails don't go in my general GMail inbox, which I've sorted.

Tabs for labels/accounts would be really useful.

Yeah, shame you can't make custom tabs.

I misread that and thought, that would be handy sometimes.

At least two, assuming it loads on the primary tab. The igoogle interface is fucked (they'll not fix it either, igoogle dies in November
:(
).
Although in theory it should be good, I can ignore all the offer newsletters etc. in one tab, but it keeps bugging me about unread mail until I click the tab and delete/mark as read, so it's really no better than before.
I may get used to it one day. May.

Still only one
extra
click, surely? you've got to click on the actual mail either way.
And I think the reason it doesn't bother me is I usually deal with my mail via the notifications anyway. Notification pops up, I click it then click on mark read or delete or open, as appropriate. So all the tabs do is keep it tidier.
But yeah it's a shame you can't like right click a tab and mark all as read and stuff.

Earwigs have two. One for every day duties, and one for backup/special occasions.
