Watched this somewhat tired after Mrs WilliamA's birthday dinner (a byriani that I cooked) so may have missed the occasional nuance. OK, Adam Sandler plays a lonely Czech cosmonaut (alternative-ish future) racing a Korean team to investigate a gas cloud beyond Jupiter. Lonely and love-lorn (His marriage is going through a rocky spell) he finds a giant spider on board, tarantula stylee, about half as big as him. Turns out this spider is super-ancient and telepathic. It probes him (nj) in a kind of arachnid-psychoanalyst manner and an unlikely friendship develops.
Turns out he's the last of his spider race who have all been infected by a deadly parasite and he's going to the cloud to end his life.
Anyhoo, it's all sombre stuff, with the cloud as a mystery. Adam Sandler (Jakub) isn't the happiest bunny, athough I have to say it was a surprisingly good performance. It helped that his big Czech cosmonaut beard meant I didn't have to keep thinking "my God it's Adam Sandler". It owes a HUMUNGOUS debt to Tarkovsky's Solaris which I couldn't get over. I was amazed not to see this in reviews, but then I searched for that specifically and a fair few other reviewers agree.
