I see that the Dyson Supersonic Hairdryer has a 'digital' motor. I feel positively primitive; both of the hairdryers in the WilliamA household are those awful old analog hairdryers -  barely any better than the original Babbage difference hairdryer.

Not that I've used one for my hair in around 40 years.

So how's it work? You blow your hair with it and nothing happens and then a few seconds later there's a boom and smoke and Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be Björk?

I think something like that.

Apparently they use that special binary hot air.

Always wondered what the fuck the digital motor claim was. Keep meaning to look it up to see the ridiculous justification for describing it as digital.

Maybe it uses a transistor and PWM rather than a switch with different resistance.

Also saw an advert claiming something along the lines of it being able to check the temperature 10 times a second as if it was ground breaking. I thought that was very poor, a 10 Hz refresh rate isn't anything to brag about. Not that it needs to be any more.

Basically I'm a self-loathing Dyson owner.

I note your doubts about the value of this, or whether a 10Hz refresh rate is any great shakes. It occurs to me that the humble thermostat, based on expanding metal or wax (or whatever), is capable of an almost incalculably superior performance.

Digital is one of those words that people who don't have the faintest notion of what it means, or else cynically disregard that knowledge use - like people used 'radioactive' or 'electrical' in all kinds of ridiculous ways in the C19th and C20th. My last work in IT was on the HMRC contract and their Chief Technology Officer started calling everything in sight 'digital' and he had that awful habit of using it as a noun.

haha. As a fellow person without enough hair for a dryer, I was wondering.

I too own a Traitorous Twat Vacuum, unfortunately. It's pretty good tbh, just wish it wasn't helping a scumbag make more profit.

Indeed, I bought mine on black Friday, and I suspect I was sent a brand new model rather than a refurb, so I can only hope he made a reduced margin on my sale.

Our Dyson went south the other month, so we got a Shark.

S'bloody brilliant and well worth redirecting your money away from Dyson. It made me the most excited I've got about a vacuum cleaner. I literally had to sit down after using it. :|

I looked at the Sharks, really couldn't justify the price unfortunately.

Yep. Full price, they're hugely expensive things. There's a lot cost there for something that's a load of plastic with a motor.

We found a pretty good amazon deal where that one I linked to was going for £180.  (cheer)

We got that same Shark. £180 too. Although reduced to £140 a week or so later.

It's pretty good. Way better than the previous thing we had. The lift off bit is handy too.
