I'm a fan of dark chocolate, usually the darker the better. The 90% one made by Lindt is probably my favourite. Then while out shopping I found this:

Anyone here tried it? It's incredibly bitter as you might expect, but it's definitely an acquired taste. The wife's a huge chocoholic and even she can't stomach this. I'm getting used to it and starting to appreciate the taste. Not sure what the caffeine content is, but even a small amount is keeping me up night. (bounce)

According to google:

Probably around 198mg caffeine per 100g of chocolate.

By comparison, an average* cup of coffee is around 95mg of caffeine.

I'd certainly try that if i saw it in the shop. But to be honest, my favourite chocolate is Dairy Milk :C

*whatever an average cup of coffee is :?

I love darker chocolate, but anything over ~60% starts to tastes like soap.

Ever had chocolate stout?

Well, that sorta confirms it. I also have a very low caffeine tolerance.

I found the 100% bar in Sainsburys. Have they made it to Scotchland yet?

I wouldn't trust your chocolate, being that close to the American abomination that is their chocolate, something has no doubt rubbed off onto yours.

I've had chocolate ale in a pub, and it was brilliant. The local brewery here in Saltaire do a chocolate stout which is sold in the local booze outlets, so it's buyable in bottles and it makes its way into the pubs on occasion. The pub we sometimes quiz at used to do a cherry ale, that was definitely my favourite, but I've not seen it since (probably 'cos I've not been to a pub in many a year and have to avoid anything carbonated :C )

Yeah, that's right. I lost faith in our local hospital nursing staff after I'd had the op to sort it out (where they wrap part of the stomach around the oesophagus to tighten stuff up, leaving you unable to belch or throw up, at least for a while) and they prescribed me effervescent pain killers. (fail)

Anywho, anything with bubbles in generally isn't good. Wine seems to be fine though. :J

Right enough. What brand tastes soapy to you? If we can get it here, I'd like to try it. It could be that we've become desensitized to a soapy taste like the USians have to that sickly taste in their chocolate.

Aye we have Sainsbobs up here, can be hard to spot though as they blend in pretty well, what with them being gingers and all.

Lindt does a line of progressively darker, with added flavors, but it's quite expensive. Most of the cheaper imported stuff is Belgian. We have about equal parts American (Hershey, which I agree is sickly) and Cadburys.

Yep, the price is fairly high, you can pay £2 for a 100g bar of the Lindt here. But when a ~40g Yorkie goes for anything between 60 and 90p in vending machines and shops, it doesn't look that bad.

What does it cost in Canada? Presumably there's some import markup adding a bit extra to the price.

Usually $3.50-4. Sometimes on sale for less. Varies a lot by chain.

Great big "Presidents Choice" (house-brand)  belgian bars go for ~$5 at "No Frills" supermarket, $7 at Shoppers Drug Mart across the street -- both chains owned by Westons.

Seconded for Dairy Milk. Or Daim. Or both. (I'm currently chugging one of these bad boys).

At the other end of the scale the crappiest chocolate we have is probably that found in Kinder eggs. Or advent calendars.

I remember watching a documentary about chocolate some time back, and the expert saying that good quality stuff should always make a snapping noise when you break it. Kinder eggs tend to crumple.
