Raspberry Pi 3 has been released (and I've obviously ordered one)

https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/raspberry-pi-3-on-sale/

Quote:
A 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU (~10x the performance of Raspberry Pi 1)

Integrated 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1

Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 and 2

BCM2837, BCM43438 AND RASPBERRY PI 3

For Raspberry Pi 3, Broadcom have supported us with a new SoC, BCM2837. This retains the same basic architecture as its predecessors BCM2835 and BCM2836, so all those projects and tutorials which rely on the precise details of the Raspberry Pi hardware will continue to work. The 900MHz 32-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU complex has been replaced by a custom-hardened 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53. Combining a 33% increase in clock speed with various architectural enhancements, this provides a 50-60% increase in performance in 32-bit mode versus Raspberry Pi 2, or roughly a factor of ten over the original Raspberry Pi.

I was meaning to buy one for the sound system project I'm waiting for parts on but wanted to wait until all the stuff from China had arrived.

I'll swap a 2/3 elsewhere and use the 2 in the sound system.

I also bought 3 Chromecast Audios last night because they are £14 each at Currys (fail)

Hah. I only of 3 Pis, 1 in a box doing nothing (model 1, dead ethernet), 1 running xbmc on the TV and one running my laser.

I've noticed no need at all to change the xbmc one, it runs flawlessly. The laser would definitely benefit from the speed increase though (10 minutes to convert an image to gcode, I'm not that bloody patient!)

Pi3 for the laser then, needs to be done.

Counted all mine and it looks like this will be the 12th. Not quite sure how that has happened.

Order is already placed. I'll punt the Pi2 back on eBay. Or maybe keep it to run a 3D printer idea I'm working on...

Now, what are these chromecast audio things you're muttering about? Actually, don't tell me.

Well they were priced at around £30, I decided I wasn't going to buy one until they came down to about £20, but instead they came down to £14.

One will go in my sound system thing, so I'll have the option of Chromecasting, Bluetooth or RPi running Volumio.

One will be going in the kitchen to replace the old phone running MPD.

One will find a home somewhere else.

So it's a wireless audio streaming thing? You mean it would save me having to reach all the way over there to physically plug my phone's headphone jack into the amp?

The chromecast has a wire. And requires another power plug. But it's pretty cool nonetheless. I'm tempted to get another while they're cheap but I can't think where I'd use it, the flat isn't big enough.

Ah yes, a power plug. Definitely running short on sockets round the back of the telly. Think I'll pretend I don't know they exist for a while longer.

Yeah but no wires to the phone/casting thing!

I suppose there could be a spare USB port lying around to power off, but less likely if it's an old amp/stereo.

Very old (I've had it for 16 years, and it was second hand then. Really must upgrade.)

May be a USB port on the back of the Virgin box, or xbox or something though... NO SHUTUP I DON'T NEED IT!

Already thinking about an arduino with an IR transmitter and wireless receiver that can turn on my HiFi and control the volume, then control that from an RPi which will also send commands to the Chromecast  :-B

I actually lost the remote for a while and found that someone had recorded the IR codes so used them to transmit from an RPi that was being a media player :$
