Headphone/Speaker Jack Question

Can someone point me in the right direction please? I want to add a headphone jack to one of the old tyme radios I've hopped up, but I want the speakers to mute when the headphones are used. Is this done with a wiring trick or is it software controlled? I hope it's the former! I have looked all over teh webs but everything I find is related to a laptop or Windows, I can't find anything about wiring them to do this! IIRC it's a physical 'switch' (like a metal tag) built into the jack that toggles between speakers and phones when plug is inserted/removed. Maybe it's a sw thing now. ---- "There is no upside to Ebola."

It's called a dual circuit or switched socket. You want a headphone jack socket with 5 external pins. One is common for ground, two are L/R audio input, and two are L/R audio output (to speakers). When you insert the headphone jack the internal pins move, disconnecting from the speaker pins and connecting to the headphones instead. I was able to find a couple headphone jacks, now I'm starting to rebuild my old tyme radio. I've decided to try to put an LCD screen in it to display track info and possibly weather & temperature. And a couple other geek touches. Currently trying to find code to drive the LCD and get the wiring correct for it.
