I'm on the verge of upgrading forum software and my forum co-host is concerned about browser compatibility.  Particularly IE.

Is that a valid concern?

Also, (in your estimation) what features of the latest, greatest will we find most valuable?

Thank you!

Ooops!

I guess one of the features in the latest software version is the way threads are viewed.

Sorry about the duplicate topic.

I didn't think my first post got through.

What aspects of browser compatibility is your co-host concerned about? I access Teh using both IE and Safari, and the only problem that I can think of is the (third party) text editor, which seems to be impaired IMO.

Here's what he said:

Also be aware that some new commands that work with most software will not work with Microsoft's browsers. As soon as IE is updated with new operating systems it is labeled out of date. There is an advantage to older software with IE compatability.

I'm aware of the old IE comments tricks to bypass some of the really older browsers' shortcomings, but I thought that those were largely a thing of the past (pretty much after v6 for most compatibility issues). Browsers just render HTML, execute JS, a sprinkle with CSS pixie dust. I can't for the life of me think of anything, other than ancient CSS incompatibilities, that would fit the bill here. But it's been a while since I web-developed in earnests, I have to admit.

Perhaps Matt, Milko, or someone else can help. God help us if it's Paeter though, we'll never understand the answer (largely because he'll misread the problem, then won't admit it).

Thank you, I appreciate your input.

Guess we'll wait to see if there's more.

I am so far out of touch, I might as well be an IE6 browser in human form.

There's no good reason I can think of to stay with things that are that old though. Have these forums that might be upgraded got a few additions that were written to only work on Old IE?

A little over a year later and I still haven't upgraded my software.

Primarily, because I'm not an IT guy.

My specialty is having the gift of gab on an online forum for the awards and engraving industry.

:-)

The person who was going to do the upgrade disappeared, after learning how much work it was going to take, version by version.

I realize that volunteerism is the spirit of this site, but if there's a qualified person willing to do the upgrade, I certainly wouldn't expect a freebie.

Thought this would be a good place to ask.

Thank you.

Instead of payment, why not help Kenny with the Teh 2007 award ceremony. I hear it's coming on apace nowadays.

It's a possibility, except I don't know what's involved in getting awards to the UK from the US, in terms of $.

It seems I have a person to do the upgrade, but depending on the number of awards, etc., I'd be up for giving back to the Beehive community in that way.

I could probably help you get up to date.  If you want you can PM me and we can discuss it.  I'm in PA so I don't think I can do an onsite upgrade!  ;-)

Edit: Just reread your last post and see you already have someone, so nevermind, unless they bail on you!

Reading is hard sometimes!

Thank you, Ken.

I appreciate your offer.  I "think" the person will follow through.

If not, I'll certainly be in touch.

Thanks again!

Revisiting this topic.

When upgrading from 1.0.1 to the latest, greatest, I assume there are versions in between that need to be used in the process.

If so, where does a person find and download those versions?

All releases appear to be on SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/beehiveforum/files/beehiveforum/

I don't think incremental upgrades are still necessary - they used to be, but now there's just a single upgrade script (instead of the upgrade-a-to-b.sql files that the early versions had).

Matt can confirm for sure whether you can jump straight from 1.0.1 to 1.5.2 in one go?

It's not going to work.

By all means try it, but you'll probably break your forum.

If you want to keep your existing forum, upgrading one version at a time, taking backups between upgrades.

If you don't want to keep your existing forum (or don't mind archiving it), start a new one with the latest version.
