What I'd really like is some kind of space exploration game, flying a ship, buying and selling cargo, fighting space pirates etc.

Essentially, Elite. But I can't afford that till January. What's out there that's either free or pirate-able to keep me going till then?

Just discovered the X series in a review yesterday. Jim'll lent me a couple - are they really that much of a time sink?
