If anyone has a USB DVB-T/RTL-SDR adapter that is gathering dust, and you like aeroplanes, I suggest looking into the dump1090 software. Or more specifically use the package here for the RPi - http://feed.flightradar24.com/raspberry-pi/ - and start tracking local aeroplanes and submitting the data to Flight Radar 24. If you submit data you get a free Premium account.

Even with the cheap desktop antenna you can get a range of about 70 miles in each direction.

I was running it on my linux server but that's under the stairs so reception wasn't great, though in the south direction it was picking up planes as far as Birmingham. My East-West range is poor because I'm in a terraced house.

It's now running on a Raspberry Pi and I've started to build a couple of antennas which are designed for the correct wavelength so see if I can get a better range. They are best placed outside with a decent view of the sky. My current antenna is a tin can cut in half with a wire sticking out of the top! Even with small homemade antennas you can get upwards of 200 miles range.

I must admit it gets a bit obsessive seeing what aeroplanes I'm tracking.

If anyone wants a look at my live map - http://fr24.antthomas.co.uk

:D that's ace.

What units are the plane's speeds in?

Knots. The adapters only cost about a fiver. I think I'll put it in the attic.

Possibly, not sure if there's enough info though. Give it a go.

If anyone wants to create a completely minimal raspbian installation with pretty much everything stripped out to start, give this a go - https://github.com/debian-pi/raspbian-ua-netinst

Incredibly simple to use.

I have a Pi 2 B.

Anyone know what I need to do to have it work as USB Mass Storage?

Preferably via the micro USB slot, but if that is definitely power-only then by any other means.

Ideal goal is to pretend to be Mass Storage but actually access the filesystem via a software proxy.

Definitely not by USB micro, that's power only.

I have no idea how to do that. But why would you want to? What's your idea?

Maybe some form of USB networking might be a compromise.

Or do you want to attach a device to it to write to it?

MDI port in car - I want more functionality than just attaching a dumb USB drive.

Haven't been able to find any actual technical specs on MDI - only a page of info badly translated from German, but pretty certain USB networking isn't an option.

Not sure if the mp3 player / iPod integration is also just mass storage - there's indication in the above doc that it's special, and if so emulating whatever that is would also work. (But I figured more effort finding how to do that with a Pi.)

Pretty sure iPod mode is different to Mass Storage. I think the Stereo is able to access the iPod database rather than just read the files. Makes for a bit better experience I assume.

Does your stereo support Bluetooth A2DP? That's what I use for listening to different things from my phone.

Looks like you can get a Bluetooth MDI cable for £70. Pricey.

I agree. Other option is a Bluetooth to 3.5 mm stereo adapter.

I have one in the kitchen that cost about £3 and works quite nicely, apart from a god awful voice announcing when a device has paired. I'm going to look for one that doesn't do that. But not spend much more than a fiver.

The idea is to get more functionality than plugging a USB drive in - anything going via the 3.5mm means losing the ability to use the controls to skip, display track titles, etc.

Yeah true. It needs to be native Bluetooth rather than bodged on.

In theory you can write a driver to make the (big) USB ports do anything. But if you disable the normal USB stack to do that, then you'd presumably also lose use of other USB devices (storage, network, peripherals).

I'm pretty sure what you want to do is possible, but I've no idea how feasible it is and it would almost certainly be worth getting one of the preexisting alternatives instead.
