"We're far superior to those filthy barbarous Greeks."

And although Clegg did 'predict' the riots, it wasn't necessarily for the right reason, which goes far deeper than the economic issues of recent years.

The caption with this photograph is British police officers arrest a man as rioters gathered in Croydon on August 8, 2011:

Doesn't look like an arrest to me. :S Looks more like the fat bald cop is either is trying to strangle him, or about to lunge in for a snog, whilst the other bald one is disappointed he has to wait.

Also curious that the police appear to use Nikon SLRs... would have expected a cheaper and far less bulky compact camera to be sufficient.

I'd post a picture of Donovan McNabb but you wouldn't get it anyway.

I don't see the problem. The poor man has clearly just dislodged his contact lens, and since our policemen are so nice, seven of them have gone to help. One even has a portable emergency basin with him.

I thought they were giving him an emergency dental examination.

Pete: which SLRs? If it's the pro ones then I can understand: they're more likely to survive a riot than a flimsy compact, and will be able to shoot in worse conditions than the tougher compacts. Even if they're using the consumer-level SLRs I guess it could just be for the low light ability.

The police photographers can get very arty about the whole thing.

It's so they can shoot RAW and have a better argument against "wusnae me. You just photoshopped me in that pic, innit"

Ah yeah, that makes sense and now that you mention it I remember reading a few years ago how Nikon (and presumably Canon) make special versions of their cameras for law enforcement that have additional security and integrity stuff.

also:
That article comes of as slightly preachy, and is also mistaken when it says raw files are a read-only format. While for most purposes that's true, there's nothing inherent in the format that makes it unmodifiable – if you can read the data and translate it into an image, you can do the reverse.

Looks most like a D3000, which is bottom of the range.

Is that still going to have better low-light performance than a decent compact?

Well, unless it is a special police-only version that just uses the same shell but has better internals.

Aye, I read some time ago about only certain digital cameras being used in the US as their courts require some kind of hash/checksum thing to prove that the image hasn't been tampered with - and only somtehing like the 1DS did it back then. Can't remember what it was called though :(

I dunno, which pictures are you looking at? None of the ones on TBP have police using cameras in them.

Oh, yeah I see it now. Didn't even notice it at first. I dunno, it's kinda hard to tell what it is, although it looks more like a D90:

And he seems to be looking through the viewfinder with his left eye.

Oh and even a bottom-end SLR is going to have way better low-light image quality than a compact, just because of the sensor size.

I use my left eye for the viewfinder. What's wrong with you?

I initial instinct was a D90, but there appears to be a ~45° angle on the viewfinder/flash bit, which seems to match the D3000.

But looking more closely, the button to the left of the LED does look more like it's where the D90's info button is compared to the D3000's delete button.

If I see a Mr B 610 wandering around I'm gonna ask him. :)
