I'm not sure it'll make a lot of difference. Al Qaeda, inasmuch as it is an organisation at all, is entirely cellular, so at an operational level it won't make a blind bit of difference. I suppose it leaves a vacuum for a new symbolic leader.

I don't think American triumphalism is particularly clever, even if it is understandable at a visceral level.

The traditional approach for announcements of this type is "Osama bin Laden: 'im gorn" or, if you were feeling particularly creative/obscure, "Osama bin Laden: 'im bin Laden to rest".

Other than that, what Steve said.

I've just checked on Google Maps and his compound was just 42 miles from where I used to live. Which used to feel like the safest place on earth for a little white sahib to wander all day.

Body of Bin Laden buried at sea, says US government official, quoted by Associated Press

so, no evidence then, just a claim to have killed a guy that most of the intelligence community has belived to be dead for quite some time?

There's clearly going to be a number of revenge attacks now.

Yes, I thought that was a bit odd. Considering the symbolic importance of his death you'd have thought they'd want a good few independant folk to have a look before dumping him in the sea. Does seem to be just one person claiming it at the moment.

US government conspiracy nuts are going to have a field day with this one.

The timing is just good enough to have a positive influence on the elections for Obama I reckon, any closer and it would be too convenient, but it happening now means people will only remember the finer point when it comes time to vote - namely Obama's (Administration) got OBL.
