It is nothing to do with you. Leave it. Go and enjoy Christmas and do whatever it is you do.

what shops?

eh? why would you need a shop?

who made equipment?

I don't know, rockwell if memory serves

how using an 80s phone line?

standard dial-up on a BT line

price of equipment?

not a clue, it was supplied to us

suppliers?

the development company that wanted us to use their service

phone companys?

BT

Trig old fruit, this isn't a new thing, I used an early dial-up modem to send files from Bristol area to Gloucester over a BT line in the late 80s, the files were small enough to fit on a floppy disk and took 2-3 hours to send (it would have been quicker by car) but we wanted to do it and the company at the other end paid for all the equipment

oh, you might be interested to know that wireless isn't new either, my dad was sending image files via radio in the 60s and 70s on equipmet he built himself

my company designed equipment for stress testing microchips during the design phase

the other company manufactured printed circuit boards (PCBs) from our designs

I work for myself, I can be online whenever I like :)

it wasn't my company, I meant the company I worked for

big firms (motorola, intel, etc) designed new microchips, could be CPUs, memory chips, graphics chips, sound chips, whatever - we designed the systems to stress-test them - can they work at 200OC - can the same chip stay working at -50, what if the humidity is 50%? what if the power source is unstable? etc etc

I was not in the electronics design side, I mostly did PCB layout design, someone else had designed the system and I converted their paper designs to physical circuit boards
