My PC case is behind the monitor, cos i have a huge desk and it leaves really easy access for plugging in things to test/use them.

We seem to have a conflict of interest, because I couldn't give a shit.

How strange.

 

I've never liked putting cases on the floor where they can be kicked, rammed by fast-moving swivel chairs or abused by dogs. (These are all real examples of damage to PCs that the support staff at my last job had to deal with).

That's got nothing to do with dust.
It's because the carbon monoxide produced by the fire will rise, whilst the oxygen you need to breathe will not. (or something along those lines)

Many cases have a front/side fan to take the air in, spread it over the components, and blow it out the back.

I dont see the point in a "blow in" fan. Room termpertures vary. Your best just letting all fans inside blow HOT HOT air out.

It's not even that is it? And I'm frankly surprised you didn't mention that it's simply that as a gas gets hotter it becomes less dense, so it rises, hence, in a fire the hot air rises towards the ceiling carrying the fumes and smoke with it. Also why fire detectors should be placed horizontally on a ceiling.
