Interesting. I haven't seen either Hard Eight or Magnolia. Maybe I should.

This one has a very similar vibe to the Coens' Blood Simple. Magnolia is a better, more complex and polished film (IMO), Hard Eight has a ton of wild, raw energy going for it. Mostly great performances by a relatively unknown at the time cast, including a mesmerizing Philip Seymour Hoffman cameo.
