RetroPie

I do, I'm using Motion Blue, which is good as it has support for PSX roms out of the box, which is something that the more recent build (though admittedly out of date now) of vanilla Retropie doesn't support. Motion Blue's a custom build of RetroPie, I got a working download of it eventually, but had to do a fair bit of searching to find a proper download link and avoid dodgy ad links. I started here at ArcadePunks but if you want to save yourself the hassle, I can host the file on Google drive or something.

I got a set of 6 button megadrive controllers for nostalgia sessions on Street Fighter 2, as they're the closest analog I could find to the original pads. However, the d-pads on mine are very stiff - it's difficult to get them to consistently recognise diagonals. I'm thinking of upgrading and getting some PC type controllers similar to the Saitek P880 I use on the PC.

Do you need a keyboard to get these things setup? I tried (I think) Retroperitoneal (haha, gboard autocorrect) a while ago and just plugged my 360 controller into it, which worked fine for the main menu. I think the actual emulators needed some setting up to use the controller and I gave up.

Yeah, there's a bit of tweaking to do to get the controllers setup, each emulator within retropie can be configured seperately for the control setup, as can each game if you want to go down to that level.

A USB keyboard is needed for the initial setup - network settings, path to ROMS (if hosted on an external source) etc. Once that's done though you can do everything with the controller.

Cool, thanks. I have a mini Bluetooth keyboard which I didn't have before so I'm gonna give it another go. And if it works well maybe look at some retro controllers.

8bitdo.com has a great selection of retro controllers. No 6 button mega drive style ones though. :C

Oohh, nice. I'll take a look. I used to have an Amiga and was always amazed at the amount of buttons consoles had compared to the one button joystick.

Hah, yeah - my brother and I had an atari2600 with the mono button joystick while others had NESs with their 4 button witchcraft. We were very jealous.

Yay! I have RetroPie running on my Pi2 now. 360 controller is shit though. The keyboard was definitely necessary to set things up.

So what games should I play?

Flashback and Roadrash on the megadrive, oh and the Streets of Rage games.

Shining Force 2 is a great RPG if you've got the time.

Flashback. Good call. I always think of that as an Amiga game though. Trying to think of some I used to like (probably mostly Amiga games). Putty, Pang, Superfrog, Supercars, Wizball.

Obviously Sonic 2.

Donkey Kong Country, F-Zero (won't be good on the 360 pad - last time I tried, whenever I went over a jump I ended up off the side).

Gotta be Amiga for the music. But lots of people prefer the Megadrive for the controls. Definitely not the FMV intro of some versions (Sega CD and PC I believe).

You got amiga emulation working well?

Never had any consoles as a kid but did have an Amiga.

I haven't tried much on it yet. Putty and Rainbow Islands worked fine. I tried Pang and The Chaos Engine but they both had a guru error. Think I need to play with the ROM/memory/CPU settings. A mouse and keyboard (my mini Bluetooth keyboard has a built in track pad) is very useful for it.
