Once upon a time

So I bought a (supposedly) legit Win7 oem activation key offa this outfit http://stores.ebay.ca/cheapercodes?_trksid=p2047675.l2568

Smells a bit dodgy, but I only gambled ~9-bucks on it and they emailed the key with instructions right away. The OEM key doesn't work with MS downloads (retail only), but they supplied a google drive download link (hopefully not malware-infested). Gonna find out if this thing works in a few days. If it does  :-O~~~ .

PC parts should be here sometime today.

You checked against the 40 character SHA1 hash, right?

Not the 8 character CRC or 32 character md5, neither of which are tamper proof.

(Not that SHA1 is bulletproof, but it's only weakened, not broken yet. Probably.)

I've bought a bunch of cheap Windows licences and all but one have worked straight out of the bag. The one that didn't was replaced without quibble.

MS ISO downloads only work with retail keys, not oem. If you had read the OP more carefully, you would have already known that. But you didn't.  :-/

For those following this saga with bated breath: I just used the MSI "Smart Tool" to slipstream USB 3 drivers into the W7 iso, else kb would not work during installation. And after searching for how to disable UEFI, I re-read this entire thread and found Ant's post where he mentions that it's better to leave it enabled.

The most literal and one-dimensional interpretation possible. We expect no less.

Plus, as evidenced fairly recently, if you were paying more attention and reading posts unlike my accused and learned friend Koswix you may have gleaned that it's better to leave the UEFI enabled.

I did read that, but does the sha1 hash not suggested content of said ISOs is the same, so how can the dodgey one accept your key but the download one not, if they are the same?

OK, whatever. Instructions that came with the key said you couldn't use an OEM key to download an ISO from MS (you have to enter a valid RETAIL key to download), and to download the ISO from google drive instead. So I did, and when y'all started hollering about bots and whatnot I ran a shasum on the iso using MS's own hash and it matched. I guess I'll know in a few days if it's any good.

Your link you talks about using a COA for Home Premium key on a retail Home Premium disk, not an OEM Pro key on a retail Pro disk. So there's that.
