Old fart

It appears that I've retired. The gift and card would seem to confirm it.

Overwhelming joy or impending doom?

(and congrats)

I think you should still go to work, Falling Down style.

Somewhere in the last 35 years, the fairly interesting job of solving problems, designing programs and writing code changed almost imperceptibly into solving pretend problems, designing spread sheets and writing reports. I will be happier.

And thanks!

It is tempting, but if I stirred up trouble an investigation might reveal that I was practicing for retirement as long as a year ago.

Only a year? I've been practicing my whole life! I'm fucking good at it.

Happy retirement! May it be as long and happy as a Manthorp appendage.

I can only hope that WmA's life in retirement is neither as leathery nor as diseased as my appendage.

I wasn't going to mention it

Congratulations mate. Enjoy but don't get bored, that's when the sofa monster gets you. I have watched my mum slowly become a couch potato over the last year and its heart breaking. We can't get her to do anything except walk to the shops, watch TV or read books.

My wife is going back to work in September so we have asked my mother to be a carer for our daughter which will hopefully bring her out a bit more.

Go, enjoy it, just don't sit still!

What's Wattsy said.

Unless there's a spider or aggressive looking doorframe around, in which case please back away calmly and sit yourself down until the situation can be resolved.

Congrats! Did you make a rambling speech about "in my day" on the way out? :)

Well, it wasn't rambling but it did contain all those cliches about missing the people and not the work and how some of them I'd seen every weekday except for holidays for the last 30 plus years etc.

It doesn't matter how cynical I felt about the company towards the end of my time there, it was a big change and it would have felt phony to say anything too prepared or disparaging or whatever.

I took pity on the assmembled masses and kept it brief.

I'm really liking 'assmembled'.  Greg's assmembled, and I did the membling.

If that isn't old age, I don't know what is.

And yes, these days my membling is brief.
