External HD or dock

I want to get an external hard drive for backupping my stuff. I almost bought one today in Tesco that was reduced but after reading some bad reviews I'm glad I didn't.

I've also been considering a SATA docking station for a while so I can more easily fix people's computers/drives and use some old SATA drives I have lying around. I can do that now but I have to use my IDE enclosure, plug a SATA power adapter into the molex and plug that into the drive, then plug a SATA cable from the drive to a SATA to USB adapter I have, then that to the computer. Then get a big enough HDD for backupping things.

Docks aren't cheap though. A drive and dock would be more than an external drive. More convenient with an external drive that doesn't require a separate power supply. Just wash plug and go play backup. But I might use the other drives more if I have a dock that I can more easily plug them into.

Did Mr Manthorp buy a dick at some point?

Most probably. Though I think all photographic proof was destroyed.

Never looked into pricing myself, however I imagine it's set at a premium. Would a 42" screen be big enough to see the, erm... 'event' in all its glory?

I did, but it was a flimsy Chinese dick and stopped working after rough handling.

I now have a pair of SATA data & power cables trailing out of the arse of my machine & just hot-swap loose drives when I want to back up & transfer large amounts of data.  Crude but effective.

Sounds good to me, I like bodgery.

Oh no, you don't want a flimsy dick. Definitely better to have a sturdy, solid, rigid one. That was one of my worries after seeing some cheap dicks, they looked like they might fall apart after not much use.

The arse end cables might be a good idea though. Not so useful if I want to plug the HDD into the laptop or somewhere else tohufg.

I've heard that Throb's dick is anything but flimsy. Although IIRC, it only seems to be him that says it.

Yes, I had to extend the power cable, though the SATA data was long enough functionally, if not for elegant usage.  But I am used to scrabbling about on my knees, wrangling male connectors.

How big a hard drive do you need (since I happen to have a 3TB one, still sealed)?

It's this ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-Station-External-Desktop-Drive/dp/B00C9TEOCA ) one.

Long story short, we ordered one and two turned up. I'm not in the slightest bit honest, so I thought I'd sell it. Interested?

£65...any haggling will increase the price.  :-Y

I'll give you twenty quid and I won't report you for fraud.

Just send me one and I won't report you for fraud but I'll report the other two for blackmail.

Thanks but I've ordered some cables like Manthorp's idea. Shouldn't really need more than about 300GB.

Fair enough, guess I'll do the honest thing and send it back.
