Downloaded 5% in ~4 minutes. So about an hour and a half? Not too bad for release day, if it holds up.

P.S. is Win 10 any good? do I want it? should I be upgrading my laptop to it in the middle of exam revision?

it was, yeah. I dunno why the download is taking so long for me - I have a 60mb connection and it's gonna be at least a three hour job. Maybe related to how much of a mess windows is for me now though.

If you're doing the free upgrade you can't just install Windows 10 without having first upgraded from 7, 8 or 8.1. Once you've upgraded and activated Windows 10 you can perform a clean reinstall if you wish, but you must do an upgrade first to link your previous Windows activation to Windows 10.

Can I upgrade a Win7 oem (legit) from the iso, as in dl the iso, upgrade-install, done?

Apparently yes

Ah well - I had to go out, so hibernated my PC. Just booted it up again and now the downloader just pops up a "Something happened" error message and closes itself :(

Wonder if it's the shitty free wifi in the library - using a 9 year old's log on details, can't access facebook either. Suspect it's limited to port 80 stuff and certain sites are blocked

I just dl the 32-bit iso in ~15-minutes.

Probably because you're the only one downloading the 32-bit ISO.

Is it just me or are there no direct links to the ISOs? Do we have to use the stupid MS media tool? I want to use wget.

If they had any sense they'd have released it as a torrent.

That would have been very sensible.

This is for an old work Dell with C2D, which only runs 32-bit AFAIK (at least that's the version of Win7 on board).

Installer's kind of pissed me off already. I booted from the iso, had it reject my activation key, which I read wrong off the sticker, then I retrieved it by rebooting into Win 7 and using this (I was off by one character, mistook "8" for "B"), rebooted the iso, retried the correct key, it was also rejected (I'm guessing it wanted a Windows 10 key), so I tried to skip that, then it informed me for an upgrade install I'd have to boot into win7 and run set up from there: 30-minutes wasted. Funny how Linux doesn't make you do any of that stupid shit. Guess I've been spoiled.

At least it did not ask me for the key running off my activated Win7. So there's that.

Setup message: "Your computer will need to restart several times. This will take a while."

Hilarious.

aye I know. Would have tried the upgrade thing first anyhow in the hopes it was enough to fix it. We shall see! It's reached 75% and I started it about 10am, I have no idea what's taking so long but it's not my net connection as far as I know, other stuff seems OK.

C2Ds are all 64 bit.

Also, while no-doubt linux is less shitty with (lack of) licenses and what not, you could avoided wasting all that time if you'd RTFM. Or even just the instructions on the upgrade page.

Or they could have designed a better installer. Because NOBODY BUT MATT RTFM  T_T
