What I'd really like is some kind of space exploration game, flying a ship, buying and selling cargo, fighting space pirates etc.
Essentially, Elite. But I can't afford that till January. What's out there that's either free or pirate-able to keep me going till then?

I'd stick with an oldy personally...Freelancer or something can probably be had for a pittance, or one of the 'X' games if you've got 36 hours per day to spare.

I did try looking at that, but can't be arsed going through each one to check reviews etc.
Just discovered the X series in a review yesterday. Jim'll lent me a couple - are they really that much of a time sink?
