We've come to the end of a lease of some software that was providing email filtering for the firm and now we want to replace that proxy server with something. Preferably free. :C

We're using Mimecast now, so the mail filtering isn't necessary, though we do need to decommission the proxy. However, it also provides a relaxed web proxy route, which we still need for those superusers around the firm that want it.

So can anyone recommend a bit o' proxy software that'll run with fairly minimal hardware requirements and provide us with some level of configurable webfiltering? I've heard about squid, but never played with it (NJ), so don't know if that'll give us what we need.

Cheers all.

Can't vouch for it personally as I've not used it but Smoothwall is generally well regarded.

wow, I used to use that in an old PC, essentially just as a router for it was in the days of ADSL modems looking like this

And there were three of us needing t'internet. Err, Smoothwall did the job fine then!

Man, I'd forgotten about those things. I remember them. Didn't have one myself, obviously, being on dialup :'S

Haha. The stingrays. And Windows Internet connection sharing.

Ace biscuits, I'll look into that on Monday.

Milko - that looks like it's from the age of computer interactive sex toys. And not a particularly fine example, if I'm any judge.  :-@

I still think of you as being on dialup.

I seem to remember finding most of the bits for that PC in the attic when we moved in, now I think back to it. Internet's so easy nowadays.

:')

Networking stuff feels kinda... crude, still. It's still an absolute pain in the arse to get devices talking to eachother sometimes. And online gaming, if upnp doesn't work, is still as wank to set up as it used to be. Stuff should be easier by now.

I've moved house and my (fibre :Y ) internet hasn't been installed, so I pressed a button on my mobile and turned it into a wifi hotspot and connected my computer to it.

/FUTURISTIC/

I'm sure you downloaded the Windows XP Pro Corp CD on dialup and put it on a CD and posted it to me.
