Remembrance Sunday

Just went and watched the Remembrance Sunday parade in Brownhills.

I must admit to being a little choked at the moment.

A girl of about 13 played The Last Post. A few bum notes aside she did a superb job in a very moving situation.

One of my old work muckas was there representing the Falklands veterans.

You just can't imagine what those guys (and gals) must have seen and gone through. I don't think any war film could ever truly capture the events they are portraying.

Lest not forget the fallen and those that are still alive. We have what we have because of them. Not because of some poncy politician.

Was there any cameras about?

You know, the TV sort.

Are we gonna see you on Street Cops soon?

Not to take anything away from the day, but I often wonder how long we'll continue to celebrate it.
It was originally to commemorate those who died in World War 1, which ended in 1918, and any survivors of that war have got to be 100+ now.
Even World War 2 was only 20-ish years later.

I can't see people stopping celebrate it anytime soon, but will it still be around in 100 years time? 500 years?

I reckon it will be for as long as there are wars and people dying cuz of fucked up politics and religion and shit.

As long as we have a democratic society, we should remember it. It's these guys (and gals) that gave us this.

They have to be remembered, even when they are all gone.

I think it gets other things added to it, as you say it started with ww1, then ww2, but now they also add the falklands conflict and desert storm(1), I'm sure more will be added as time moves on.

As I said earlier, one of my old work muckas was in the parade, representing the Falklands. He fought in one of the big (relatively speaking) battles. Can't remember which one.

It's screwed his head up since. Which he admits to.

Each new war we fight in will get added to it. It's inevitable.

The human race just seems to love conflict. So until we all chill out...

Sorry, im trying to forget, since it did occur outside my generation.
Dont give the crap line about it wouldnt be like this if such and such didnt or did happen.

The year 0 is where it all happened. I own my life to the 1st Century. I would die for the events of the 1st Century.

OK. I'll consider myself suitably chastised then.

And in addition I will consider my point of view suitably amended after that lucid argument.

I think it can be argued that it's also a time to remember how truly shite war is and that all efforts should be taken to avoid it.

I'm no pacifist, I'm just saying that despite the time scale, it shows the 'true' cost of human life. To most people, once the figures hit 500-1000+ then the number of dead becomes just that, a number, but when you see folks who lost familiy, friends, squad mates, husbands etc it allows us to see the whole thing in a different light.

I reckon, anyway.
