Odds n' sods

Someone's brought in an old laptop to work today that doesn't boot, and I said I'd take a look and see if I could get anything worth saving off the HDD for them. Before sticking into another laptop and UBCDing it, I thought I'd be able to slave it into an old PC as a secondary drive and browse it that way, so I went through the box of useful stuff we keep around at work, looking for an IDE cable. In amongst a load of other stuff I found some floppy cables, and a boat load of SD RAM in 64 - 128MB sticks. It's probably about time we had a purge on some of this old stuff lying around. :C

ISTR we had a thread going a while back about useful boxes of wires we kept around the house for those just in case moments - I know mine's a constant overflowing mess of HDDs, anti-static bags, cable management things, fans, cables and various PC parts.

There may have been a point to all this, but I've forgotten it now.

Anyone want to buy some SD RAM?  :-|

I honestly didn't think I'd need those cables again, until I remembered I have an external scsi boot drive for the ancien powermac g3. And the pc speaker thing? A few weeks ago I mentioned I needed a replacement speaker. Exact same make/model landfilled.  X-O

Yep.

I'm loathe to throw anything away that might be useful /at some point/.

I'm a hoarder, one only needs to look at the amount of emails I've got stored in my Outlook account to realise that.

I signed one of their petitions earlier in the year and now I get reminders about every damn thing they're getting involved in, and they invariable involve begging for cash.

If you have a VT220 lying around, I'm interested.

Is it strange that I find that cute?

The best I can offer you is a crap 15" TFT and dust. So much dust.

Yeah. It's a proper terminal so all it can do is text mode. Closest it'll do to graphics is like http://i.imgur.com/2MhE2.jpg

Graphitone: It's *so* cute. They're *beautiful*. That's why I want one.

I did a search and saw the Nyan Cat one, I like it a lot.

It's made me think about taking the screens from some old dead laptops and using them as extra accessory screens of some sort. Which then led me to look at graphics cards that can drive 4 monitors, which then led me to looking at new computers. Slippery slope to spending far too much money!

The closest we've got at work is an age old Wyse terminal.

In a horrible off white

Some of the really old Wyse ones are nice, the properly 2001 A Space Odyssey looking things.

What we have is something more akin to this:

I love how old computer plastic ages like ivory, the CRT begins to dim until one day, it won't turn on.

Yeah, the newer ones just look like PCs of yesteryear. Which I still like. Computers *should* be beige. Fucking Apple.

I prefer black. It shows dust better.
