I need a new hat. My current hat is pushing 6 years, is made of wool, has shrunk, is perspiration-stained and looks like a shabby old man hat, so it fits me to a "t".

But now I need to upgrade to a SmartHat or an iHat, preferably with onboard rasberrypi or, at least, a drink holder.

After reading this awesome article I have a thing for panama hats.

(note: I don't actually wear hats; I look absurd in them)

I, too, am similarly afflicted in the hat wearing department. I look daft in anything other than a woolly beany. Even caps are dubious.

Are you looking for a summer hat, winter hat, all rounder or just something to wear to formal occasions?

Got to a Teh Meat in York at christmas time, you'll wake up with a hat an a large receipt.

All-rounder. I actually have a 'formal' hat which I keep in a bag on the shelf, 'cause I don't do formal. It's a very nice hat, but a little too big so I have to watch it doesn't blow away. I hate that. But maybe I'll have to dust it off.

Panama hats are cool. Unfortunately, the local discount department stores carry cheaply-made hipster hats (some are actually made from woven paper), silly cowboy -ish hats, military-style 'boonee' hats, and motherfucking baseball hats. No. I want a proper, dignified man's hat. I need to find a real hat store, the two I bought from since landing here have gone out of business.

Yeah, same for me. Woollen hats is all I can get away with.

Well my second favourite hat is the phrygian cap.

A proper dignified man's hat?

Ici.

Just to prove it, here I am at Cragside (a pretty cool house and the first to have electric lights powered by hydroelectrics) sporting what appears to be an overside top hat. I guess I have a smaller than average face, but whatever the reason, it looks fairly twatish.

Well yes, the hat is too large, it's anachronistic, and the gormless expression you are wearing does it (and you) no favours. Otherwise not too terrible.

Anyway I found the motherlode:

This is the make of hat I own (the formal one). I paid ~$80 ten years ago for it, and now they are well north of $200.  :-O

Men's rights activist twats have ruined hats for decades. Imagine being mistaken for one of them, it's just not worth it.

I also have a large head and finding a hat that fits is difficult. So, woollen beanie hats for winter and I've got a whatever those commie-cap things are called, type of thing.

You haven't got a large head. Your problem is that you struggle to reach the top of it to comb your hair. Easy to see how you'd be confused though.

I bought a hat with a cloth brim and mesh crown for twenty bucks. I was pressured into buying it by MrsD. The brim is too wide for my taste, but it will add that extra bit of sun protection we allegedly need. Outwardly, I am projecting the resigned dignity of a man bested by science, much like a tar sands baron. Inwardly, cringing. It is a lot cooler, temperature wise than my wool narrow-brim fedora. Now I have a few months to find a more suitable replacement.

Is that the same style as Freddy Krueger wore?
