I think they are missing a huge opportunity by not going with it.

Without Google, how many polar research boats can you name?

They should accept it, engage with it and get the public interested in whatever it is that they're doing.

No, research isn't a joke, but the public don't give a stuff about a boring old research vessel

I would be interested in Boaty McBoatface, I'd want to know where it is, what it's doing, I might buy merchandise etc for my kids - I wouldn't follow it every day but I would show at least a casual interest.

Also, "David Attenborough" wasn't even 2nd choice so the whole poll was completely pointless.
