Anyone seen a good explanation of this?

(Info on other web servers is welcome, but I specifically want Apache since it is still the main one.)

It is crazy that I'm not finding this stuff though - also looking for Tomcat and the best I've uncovered is an email reply ten years old which is potentially three versions out of date. :/

Guess I'll try asking on mailing lists tomorrow, but I just know I'm going to get people misunderstanding what I want and telling me unrelated stuff, or (more likely) blank stares and ignored.
