Linux project me do

Still waiting for my raspberry pictures to drop through my letter box I thought I would use the spare laptop I have to do some linux. The problem is every time I install a linux os I end up staring at it and scratching my head over what to do with it.

This is where teh plays its part. I need some inspiration for a project or a learning exercise to get me enthusiastic about linux.

Help me teh, you're my only hope.

Unless you have some idea of what you want to learn or do you'll continue to be stuck there scratching your head!

I don't think you can just pick Linux (same goes for any OS that you don't use regularly) and then think of something to do with it. What you want to do is think of something and then choose Linux because it's a good platform to use and it has solutions that you might want to investigate.

If you do it the other way around and pick Linux and then can't think of anything to do with it you'll just get bored and stop using it.

Very good points.

My knowledge of using Linux comes from using XBMC on Linux. This then resulted in me using TVHeadend but now VDR. With VDR being a lot more technical I've had to learn quite a bit more. It's also help with doing minor admin stuff on our group server at work.

Well it looks like I am going to be playing with xbmc some more then, that's the only thing I can think of that will keep my interest.

Definitely a decent way to start getting into it. Should give you reasonable idea about repos and dependencies if you go down a more manual installation route.

I tend to learn linux by setting myself tasks like that. Like learning how to use a particular thing or do a particular thing. But it's hard to choose for someone else.

I learned about a million times more when installing Arch than I learned during many years of previous Linux use, so I recommend giving that a go. Read this: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners%27_Guide

Cheers Xen, that looks like a good place to start from scratch.

Off to Linux world I go.

It's not easy. It's intentionally not easy because this is the price for it being simple. But if you want to learn about Linux, I believe it's the best way.

(Having said that, it's nowhere near as hard as it initially seems, either (because it's simple))

It's not rain, it's urine. And it's not a parade, it's just you and your dog.

A fucking pet parade!? We used to do that when I was just a wee lad!

Urine? Why would you do that?

Just when I begin to respect you you go and get all Facebook on us. Liking is so lame, what's wrong with just contemplative appreciation?
