MrsD. & I saw the original theatrical release in a small arthouse cinema in 1990, and it stuck in my memory as an exceptional horror film. The "director's cut" restored the emphasis on the humans as the real evildoers, rather than the 'night breed' (undead and fantastically disfigured subterranean monsters) that the studio insisted on. Incredible, non-cgi make up and effects, and very fine cinematography flesh out a great Clive Barker story. Reasonably good performances by a cast of unknowns. Watch for David Cronenberg as the arch-villain.
