I dunno what it's like on a Pi but I use it for all my TV/video needs on a Mac Mini, got pretty much no complaints for serving content off my network at least.

On a Pi2 or Pi3 it's great.
I use it on an HP Chromebox and on an S905 based box.

Agreed, I use it on a Pi2 and 3, one for my main TV and one with a 7" touchscreen. It scales really well and with the right skin looks great n'all.

A little while back I had some reason to put a disc in, I can't remember why, but it spinning up sounded like an aircraft taking off.

I actually had to buy a cheap USB DVD drive after buying my latest optical drive-less Alienware laptop but only because I wanted try try some of my old PC games, other than that I have no requirement.
I use Steam for games and Uncle Jim for films - download/watch/share/delete.
