In this area. closings and layoffs wouldn't be good at all. It used to be, out of those I know, maybe two of ten might be out work. Now, it seems to be reversing. From what I can remember, I'd say in the past ten years, we've lost five major employers, and we're looking to lose two major divisions of another one.
If all this financial mayhem means shutdowns and layoffs, then for this area in general, I'd have to say I'm worried. It's the last thing it needs. Hell, our biggest employers right now are Walmart and Lowe's. Those positions used to belong to two heavy equipment manufacturers and a clothing place. All of which are gone.
I'm self employed, so but for the cost of things and if Ed gets laid off, I don't see it affecting me personally all the much. He makes insulated windows, and the company is already in trouble. The owner recently died. Now, her son is in charge, and to call him an idiot would be an unfair insult to the rest of the idiots. I don't think anyone even has a name for the monumental amounts of mismanagement and stupidity he exhibits daily. It's no wonder they're losing customers, and everyone there is looking for another job, even Ed.
I guess we'll just have to see how things go here, but I hope we don't lose anymore employers. The area is depressed too much already. :[
