Website advice

Hi all

I have been asked to create and maintain a small beauty salon site for a mates mum. First question is, how much should I charge for a standard dreamweaver site created with a CSS template? Probable about 15 hours work or so (I am still learning)

Second question. I want to do a small slide show on the left hand column of the template to show off the salon pictures she had commisioned. Should I use an animated gif or a flash slide show with some controls (forward, back, pause) or a quick java slide show? or something even easier.

Cheers in advance

an animated gif for jpegs?! I'm not sure you should be charging at all :-P

You should do the slideshow with javascript probably. And the price should depend on how you value your time and how much budget this lady wants to spend.

Yeah, a JavaScript thing. Not Flash..

I would expect to be charged about £300, maybe £200 / £225 mates rates.

Search for "lightbox" for the slideshow - it's the most common JS slideshow tool, afaik.

(Plus, what the others said.)

Oh, and when you think you're done, post it here so we can poke holes for you to fix before you go back to them. :)

I was going to convert the jpegs to gifs and create a quick and dirty slide show :P

Thanks, been using lightbox for a while for large gallery's. Will look into the slideshow functionality.

Wha? If you've used lightbox for a while already, what do you need to look into? :S

Oh! So you're after something that sits in the sidebar and rotates images automatically, but can also be paused/etc?

Try this instead then: http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle/
( pause/resume demo , next/prev demo )

But stick to the basic/inoffensive transitions, or I'll find you and whack you round the head with something heavy. :P

that would be deeply wrong! animated gifs are ONLY for things like this:

Or this:

and they're not actually for that.

A Java-applet 3D clock would look pretty hot with those.

It could do with a "Best viewed in Internet Explorer 4 at 800x600 resolution" thing, too, I reckon. And possibly a "Made with Dreamweaver" banner.
