Full Version: Name that game

I'm trying to remember a game that I played about 10 years ago. I think it came free with a 3D accelerator card that I bought in late 1999.
The main part I remember was the multiplayer bit, which pitted you against another player or an AI controlled bot.

'You' and the opposing player were either robots, or in giant suits of armour, and you were placed on opposing sides of a playing field. The field was square in shape with raised areas creating walls and platforms, accessible by steps.
They key aspect is that there were turrets to capture, and as you captured turrets you got points. These points could be spent on defensive planes, or offensive tanks, which guarded your turrets and captured enemy turrets respectively. Once you got enough points you could buy some sort of super-tank too.
You had normal turrets, 'spawning' turrets (i.e. tanks could be launched from here rather than at the main base) and then the main base itself. Once that was captured it was game over.
Basically you spent your time runniing round destroying enemy tanks and planes, acting as a support unit so that your tanks and planes could get through and capture the opposing turrets - the other player would be doing exactly the same.

I remember the AI enemy having some memorable taunts, and I played the game loads while in my final year at uni.
And I might be wrong, but I think you could transform into a quicker but less heavily armed form, like a plane or something.

Anyone any ideas?

Mechwarrior was more over the shoulder pseudo first person wasn't it? And I think it was set in more real-world settings, green fields and hills etc.

This was definitely a third person viewpoint, and there was no greenery in sight.

My favorite retro game was http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellcats_Over_the_Pacific.

After I got bored with the stock goals (& could win every time no sweat), I discovered such stunts as sinking my own aircraft carrier, then bombing the jap carrier and landing on it after it started sinking and the deck pitched up at a crazy angle.

That was going to be my suggestion but he mentions nothing about the out of Mech walky around shooty bits, or indeed the story.

Loved this game, sure it has not stood the test of time but it was great fun.

Having searched around last night, I'm certain it was with the Apocolypse 3DX or 5D board, can't remember which.
I remember that we got it really cheap, about £40 or so, from PCWorld, and that it made Unreal Tournament playable at a decent resolution.

The only thing is, the games that came with those boards contain Mechwarrior, which is definitely not the game I'm thinking of. I'm fairly sure in Mechwarrior that you could get out of the big stompy robot and that you could upgrade/change the equipment that made it up, you couldn't do this in the game I'm thinking of.

Argh! Its like having a song in your head that you can't think of the name of, or seeing someone on TV that you recognise but can't remember where from. I can clearly remember playing the game, but just can't remember what it was called!!

Ta, but nope.
Again, that's real world setting, and this was firmly within a sqaure playing field.
Maybe I need to trawl reviews from 98/99.

I dunno - if you can find the full game somewhere, maybe.
I'm probably looking on it with nostalgic glasses on though, and even if not chances are that it won't scale well to a modern PC.

If you do find a copy though, let me know as I'd like to try it out again!

I think you'd need the full game rather than the demo though, as I know I didn't rate the campaign all that much and preferred the 'Precinct Assault' mode vs the Sky Captain - seen in the vid above.

It hasn't I'm afraid. i recently jimmed it, and whilst I spent a few happy minutes, it languishes unfinished.

I wish I'd seen this thread when you posted, I could've saved you hours trying to remember.

I used to play Future Cop:LAPD with my older brother all the time on the Playstation. We did the whole story mode co-op a few times and played a bunch on multiplayer.
I remember using my points to buy up all the bases while he saved up for a Juggernaut.

That's a nice bit of nostalgia for me. I must see if I still have my copy around anywhere and have a good play on it :D

I found a torrent, and it works great - actually almost as good as I remembered! Scales up to a decent resolution as well.
