Full Version: VMware Fusion?

I'm very happy with my lovely MacBook Pro, which is using Bootcamp to switch between OSX and Windows 7. But I have become aware of something called Fusion, which will apparently let me run them both at the same time, and get all the funky Windows Aero effects and stuff, and even do this using the existing Bootcamp partition.

Any Mac bods using Fusion? Is it any good? Am I likely to do serious irreversible having-to-reinstall-everything damage by getting the trial edition?

BTW, Mac bods, last day to buy a shitload of nice apps for $19.95, including RipIt and Tales of Monkey Island: http://www.macheist.com/ - and 25% of price goes to charidee.

I use it on my faux mac and like it so much I actually paid for it. Not tried Windows 7 on it though, or using a Bootcamp partition since I don't have one. It has not fucked anything up, so try the demo.

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2009/11/vmware-fusion-3-review.ars Depends what you want to do really, for basic apps it should be fine, anything with OpenGL or DirectX then you're much better off in Native Windows. Having a very similar set-up to you (MBP with an SSD) is the 30 seconds to reboot in the other OS really that painful?

VirtualBox has been doing opengl and direct 3d for a few versions now, and it's free. Not sure how it stacks up against VMWare though.

It's more to do with the ability to share the disk space, and just have Tweetdeck installed once.

Anyway, I've got it installed now and it's fucking awesome. Haven't tried games yet, but it runs VS2010RC beautifully. I'll probably keep the Bootcamp partition as well, mind, just for proper full-speed accelerated stuff.

I love the way the Windows Update icon shows up in the OSX system tray.

I've scrapped the Bootcamp partition, in fact, because 128GB doesn't go far when it's split between two OSes. Everything Windows-only I need runs very nicely indeed in a regular VM.

In further updateyness, Fusion 3.1 actually runs the Windows Phone 7 dev tools and emulator; a VM running inside a VM!

Updated list of things I need:

2x4GB RAM sticks @ £400.
1x512GB SSD @ £1,000.
1x24" Apple Cinema display @ £650.

Amount of money I have:

-400,000 pounds.

I'm currently using VM Fusion 2.04 on my Mac Pro and 3.0.0 on my MacBook Pro.

I have no grief with the software and I cant complain.

I would recommend using Parallels for Mac at the current time as it is faster, it also has a lower overhead on it and more customization.
