Full Version: Network that was working

On my previous install on Windows 7 somehow I got my BT Vision box and HTPC to connect to the PC for file sharing but also have net access through the wireless to the BT Hub.
Since reinstalling W7 I can only get the HTPC to access the shares on the PC and neither seem to have net access. The HTPC is setup as 192.168.137.25 with 192.168.137.1 being the gateway so I assume I had the NIC set to 192.168.137.1 before (not sure where I got that from) Wireless is setup as 192.168.1.42 with 192.168.1.254 gateway (BT hub) but I can't seem to get all the bits working.
I was very surprised when it all worked before (especially as it was so easy) but am totally confused this time. Anyone suggest anything?

You've got two different network address schemes. Everything should either be 192.168.1.x or 192.168.137.x (assuming the mask is 255.255.255.0). Look at the BT Hub and work out what IP address range it's using, and set everything else to use that.
Alternatively, set the HTPC, BT Vision and W7 machines to get their addresses from DHCP (clear everything in the IPv4 properties on both machines) and let the Hub sort it all out.

The BT hub uses 192.168.1.x so not sure why I used 137 for the PC's second network connection. Must hace seen something on Google and tried it.
The HTPC and BTV connect to the upstairs through a wireless router just using it's switching abilities. Will try the DHCP setting tonight but don'r remember thar working before.

I believe bridging the connections on this PC would allow the downstairs bits to have net access but not have access to the PC shares.
Hmm. I should have remember to write down the settings I used before.

Is it possible for you to have the "switch/old wireless router" to act as a wireless bridge? If you can you could go
HTPC -----| BTV -----|--OldRouter~~~~~Wireless~~~~~BTHomeHub-----Internet PC -----|

Oohh, now there's an idea. I've had to move my PC into the back room (baby going where the computer used to be) and don't get the best wireless signal here so using the Cat5 to the router would fix that problem.
I shall have a fiddle soon (nj) and see if I can get it working. It's a Netgear WRT54GL with OpenWRT (I think) which can do all sorts of stuff.

It was actually DD-WRT but still has the wireless bridge capability. It's all working now. Thank you :D
Don't have to leave the PC on now for BT Vision to work either (since the homeplugs stopped working - don't need new ones now either)
Yay!
