Full Version: A selfish request from a stupid American

I'll be brief.

I am in need of setting up a private forum for 5 people only, basically the owners of a company I do contract work for. I don't have access to a server where I can implement beehive. I'd like to just redirect a page from their website to a beehive forum hosted elsewhere.

I don't want to do delphiforums because.. well for a lot of reasons, mostly because of unavailablilty of usernames and the weird rules they force everyone to go by.. and trolls.. etc. I don't know of any other alternatives..

Does anyone here know someone or somewhere I can set up a barebones beehive forum on? It's for very limited access for just a hondful of people. I need to keep this as simple as possible. These people are not very web saavy. Thanks in advance.

Are you looking to pay for this or do you want it for free?

Hope to do free. Knowing the people I work for, if we pay, it won't be very much. It's not really up to me.

Fair enough, I was just asking because that might be a deciding factor whether someone will host a forum for you, even if the traffic is very low!

I understand that.. If there's a site like Delphi that does a very low monthly fee, or if someone wants to get paid a reasonable but really small amount to set up a basic forum on their server and walk away from it, I think that might be able to be arranged.

Basically the owners of this company all own other companies and travel a great deal. They have a lot of trouble getting together for meetings, and constantly emailing between 5 people is inefficient and confusing.

They want to use a forum to improve communications. Basically a suppement to email, phone calls and actual meetings. They want to have virtual meetings going on all the time on a bulletin board.

I want to use beehive because it's user friendly. I want to have their usernames be their actual names and their passwords be their actual names. I want to redirect a page from their website to the forum. I want the forum to be password protected. I need this to be utterly user friendly and a total no brainer for these people. They don't have the time or the patience to get used to anything complex.

The less options the better.. just posting discussions, the ability to invite all 5 users to a thread via email, and polls. Nothing else is needed.

Have you thought of setting it up on Ning? No cost, no setting up, no hosting and about ten clicks of a mouse from start to finish.

Google Wave is no good for us. We don't want real time communication, that's what they're having trouble arranging.

Also, they'd all have to sign up. They won't do that. I want to be able to have the forum all set up with their usernames and passwords already in existence before I present it to them.

So.. I need them to be able to go to a page on their website which would redirect to the forum. From there they'd type in their username and password and be able to post. That's how simple this needs to be for them.

edit - grammar.

That's interesting. I'm looking at it right now. I'm concerned about the username/password thing. I need to be able to set it all up for them.

I am also a stupid American who happens to have hosting and a forum already setup. I'd host it for you for a few bucks, no monthly because it's just a waste of everyones time really. Just something like a setup/hosting fee of $50 or whatever. Let me know what you think, too expensive, cheap or whatever.

My forum is here so you can test the speed and see if the host I use will work for you.

That seems just about perfect. If this flies with the owners, I could paypal you. I've already spelled it all out in this thread, but let me summarize our needs.

The forum needs to be totally private. Preferably, members use their username/passwords to access the site. No guests at all, and no way to view content without signing in.

5 users. Their usernames/passwords already set up. Users would be for example: username: john password: john. They'd need to be able to change their password.

No html, no file hosting, no chats, no frills of any kind. Only one folder to post in. They won't be interested in using anything that requires any thought at all. They need to just log in and post. No intros, no nag screens, nothing to distract their attention at all. Barebones forum only.

I don't care what the URL is. I'm going to redirect a page from their website to the forum.

Important: They need to be able to easily email invite the entire group when posting a new thread. I hope this is possible.

If you can do all that, I think we're in business. Let me know. Thanks in advance.

If it gets approved I'll give you full control over the forum. I'm pretty sure the software will do what you want, but we may need to ask a few questions here as we get it setup.

If you're still looking...
HanginOutForums.com offers free membership with free, add-free hosting for Beehive forums with X7Chat. We run a modified version of Beehive 9.1. Each member can get up to two free forums with chat rooms (chat rooms are set up on request, and you must be a forum owner to get a permanent chat room). The About Us page on the site pretty much says it all. We basically give you the raw materials and the real estate. If you need help, it's available, but the rest is up to you.

A few of the features you get as a member you might be interested in...
1mb of attachment space on the forums system
4mbs of member space in the members area (on request, ftp access)

Forum owners...
Ability to upload your own styles to your forum's styles folder. (ftp access on request)
Templates to help you create your own forums styles.
1mb of home space in the homes area for your forum's pages (on request, ftp access)
Permanent chat room (on request)
- - Choose from multiple chat room themes.
- - Use your own logo in your chat room's header.
- - Make your room, public, private, password protected.
- - - Public rooms show on the chat list. Private rooms are invisible. Both can be password protected.
- - Assign your own chat room moderators.
- - Gag, kick, and ban controls.

There is also site email with Everyone.net; username@hanginoutforums.com

NetutopiaForums.com also offers free, add-free hosting for Beehive forums with X7Chat, but it's in limbo right now. You could get a forum there, but there might not be staff around much if you need them. HanginOutForums.com has staff around throughout the day, and often the night as well. For that site, it's a necessity.

These are two of the CFN sites. There is another one that hosts PHPBB forums with X7chat or phpMyChat, but only for RPGaming forums. If it's not RPG or RPG related RPGworlds.org won't host it.

Hope that helps you out some. There are links in my signature if you want to look the places over. If you have any questions, just let me know.
