Does anybody know of a good multi purpose (format) video convertor that makes use of extra cores?

Having just taken Rendles machine off his hands I now have 4x3ghz CPU that I would like to test out for some mkv to xvid conversions.

Cheers

Fozza

+1. Whilst VirtualDub itself is not multi-threaded, the later Xvid encoders are, so using VirtualDub to create Xvid files will still result in all 4 cores being used.

VirtualDub or Mediacoder.

I sometimes get bogged down in virtualdub.

Is mediacoder more straight forward?

The options are maybe a bit easier to access. Just give it a go, only one way to find out.

If you have a PS3, why do you need to convert them to xvid?

Because I am streaming them over upnp.

They are not liked by WMP and I'm not really a fan of TVersity.

If I convert them overnight then they all just work.

Get hold of Twonkymedia from Jim, that might work well for you for watching MKVs on your PS3.

Both MKV and AVI are container formats. Is it possible to find a tool which can just convert the file without having to re-encode the streams?

In fact, just done a test on this with one of my MKV files and it appears that VirtualDubMod can do this. Load the MKV into it, set the audio and video streams to "Direct stream copy", then re-save as an AVI. It should work, although the codec used may prevent it. Worth trying anyway!

Have you tried PS3MediaServer? It works, unlike TVersity.

There's a few programs that do that. Good old GotSent did the conversion specific for the XBox360 by doing a direct copy of the H264 video and converting the audio to AAC or something and then wrapping it up in an MP4 file. So the time consuming bit was the audio conversion which wasn't really time consuming at all comparing to reencoding a film.

All you need to do is run them through mkv2vob and that will make them compatable with the PS3. That's what I do. I then copy them over the wireless network instead of streaming, then I can play them straight from the PS3.

copy them over the wireless network how the heck do you do that?

Also Mediacoder aint working keeps saying ffmpeg64.exe has stopped working.
Before it gets past the testing phase of a job

:(

EDIT: Ah google is your friend find the files then press copy! Genius. Takes an age though even with a direct Ethernet connection. However the MKV-Vob worked.

Hopefully it will work on my Archos too as it was very quick!

Glad to be of service.
Every now and again I'll copy a movie down to the PS3 when I'm playing Xbox or whatever. Then when I'm in the movie for a movie I'll turn on the PS3 and there's be half a dozen free HD movies ready to watch. Tis good.
