Full Version: Windows Phone 7 Series

I was all ready to be unimpressed by the new thing they unveiled today, but actually, it looks quite exciting. New angle on the phone thing, having a pop at Apple's thousands-of-apps-running-in-isolation model. It's going to arrive too late for my next upgrade, but I can totally see myself getting a Windows phone next year.

Now I've got to try and persuade my boss to buy me a ticket to MIX so I can find out about developing for it.

Hmm?

The UI looked potentially interesting, but beyond that... *shrug*

From the real quick peek I had at the video it reminds me of my Zune HD. The UI seems very familiar. If some device makers produce hardware like the Zune (mainly the screen) I can see this being a very hot item!

The Zune HD never came out over here, which was a shame, it looks pretty.

I've had both an iPod Touch and Zune HD. They are both very nice but the iPod kills the Zune for apps. The Zune kills the iPod at screen beautiness (yup just made that up I think). But that interface on the phone is just like it with more areas. If they came out with a phone that has the same screen as the Zune, but a smidge bigger it would kick ass!

it's certainly a big departure from the old versions. It's a very minimalist ui compared to others with lots of graphics and colorful icons, very zuney. I'm looking forward to trying it. when are handsets likely to be released? think I'm due an upgrade in October and will definitely have wm7 on my list.

I'm guessing old wm software won't work on it.they don't seem to have said much about it's (lack of?) multitasking abilities yet.

Definitely not backwards-compatible. I suspect possibly innately multitasking, probably won't find out until MIX.

Apparently someone was running WM7 on a HD2 which was able to run an old version of TomTom.

And "Applications that were made for Windows Mobile 6 are compatible with Windows Phone 7 Series. The interface of the new mobile operating system has been changed though, so the user interface for these applications will have to be changed as well."

Yeah, I'd heard about the Branch from my brother who occasionally frequents the place. I used to like it when they had the pinball table, but they went and replaced it all with leatherette sofas. Not as much fun to play with, but you don't lose any money either, what with them not having a slot.

I've probably lost a fortune down the back of them sofas from change falling from pockets.

Which shouldn't be a huge problem if you've designed your app properly.

I was hoping for some totally new take on user interface, but was sorely disappointed to see they've gone for that old chestnut of 'big squares with pictures on them'.

I know the squares do funky things like flip away from you when you tap one, but I'm hopeful they haven't gone for too much UI wizardry over substance. My major gripe with the visually-archaic Windows Mobile 5's and 6's of this world is that I can often be clawing at the 'pick up phone' button while some random task is being completed in the background until the person ringing me gets so bored and hangs up. Phone operations should be top priority (as is required by Microsoft mobile marketplace listing and 'Designed for Windows Mobile' logo certification).... but if their own stuff doesn't put the phone first then Bob's Software House isn't either.

Nokia's next OS looks pretty basic, but my gut feeling is that it will be a bit special. And my gut feelings are usually spot on.

There's a part of me, after working with some UX people this year, that makes me think we still haven't got the ideal interface for working with computers and devices and there's a very good but totally new and organic way of doing so just around the corner waiting to be found. Multi-touch is all well and good but not very accurate and difficult to pull off if you're walking around.

They're claiming it's still WinCE based and so any old application will still work with it.

Nah, that was a mistranslation on a German site, wunnit? MS issued a statement fairly quickly saying that code would need to be redeveloped for 7.

I'm pretty sure it's based on the result of sticking the XNA Framework and Silverlight 4.0 in a particle accelerator and smashing them into each other.
